Pinterest: US vs the Brits
Since late 2011, Pinterest, the newest social media toy, has exploded as a way to share things we love. Pins, or pictures and pages, that users share on the site fall into a variety of categories including home decorating, cooking, business, fashion, athletics, photography…and on and on. Because of the versatile platform that Pinterest employs in which anyone can add any content under any category, Pinterest truly has global applications.

Because of that fact, it’s interesting to examine how the tool has been adapted by different people to fit their needs. Many communities have developed within Pinterest around various industries, DIY projects, and workout routines, to name a few. But looking beyond that to global differences, a recent VentureBeat infographic compared how users in the UK differ from users in the US.
Here’s a quick summary:
- Most users in the UK are 25-34 years old, whereas most users in the US are 35-44.
- Most users in both the UK and the US are college students.
- UK users of Pinterest are much wealthier than US users – 29% of them are in the highest tax bracket, compared to 3% of US users.
- In the US, Pinterest users are overwhelmingly female (83%) whereas males are in the majority in the UK.
- US audience interests: crafts, gifts, hobbies and leisure, interior design, fashion designers and blogging resources. UK audience interests: venture capital, blogging resources, crafts, web stats and analytics, SEO and marketing, content management and public relations.
