Celebrate TweetsGiving

Social media gobbles up a lot of our free time, but there’s more to it than just letting your friends know your whereabouts.  Started in November 2008, TweetsGiving is a global celebration, seeking to change the world through gratification.  Scheduled for November 24-26 this year, participants are encouraged to give thanks through the use of social media tools and at live events.

TweetsGiving was founded by U.S. non-profit, Epic Change,  and successfully raised $10,000 last year, helping build a classroom in Tanzania.  According to the TweetsGiving website, “TweetsGiving quickly became the #1 trending topic on Twitter as thousands of grateful tweets from across the globe filled the stream, and hundreds of blogs, from Mashable to VentureBeat, spread the story.”

TweetsGiving 2009 is predicted to be even more successful than 2008, especially as Epic Change introduces live events across the globe.  Proceeds will again benefit the school in Tanzania, with hopes to build a dormitory, library and cafeteria.

Participating in TweetsGiving is easy, simply tweet something you’re thankful for, using the TweetsGiving hash-tag (#).

Major media outlets certainly see the importance of creating social change through the use of social media.  Big name sponsors of the 2009 event include Forbes, MTV, SXSW and Tech Crunch.

So don’t be a turkey this holiday season.  Show your TweetsGiving support next week!
