Networking as easy as one, two, three, foursquare
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” This famous Ferris Bueller quote from the 80s still holds true today. To keep up with this fast-paced society we live in, we often tend to rely on social networking to interact with our friends.
Facebook and Twitter ask users, “What are you doing right now?” as we anxiously await to see what our friends are up to. But according to Jenna Wortham of The New York Times, “Where are you and can I come join you?” is just as important for many urbanites in their 20s and 30s.
In her recent article, Jenna talks about a new service called Foursquare, a tool that combines friend finders and city guides, allowing users to check in with a cell phone at a bar, restaurant, etc, letting their friends know where they are and if others should meet them out.
Jenna states, “Just seven months old with about 60,000 users so far, Foursquare is still getting off the ground — especially when compared with supersize services like Facebook and Twitter, which have millions of members. But that underground status is part of Foursquare’s appeal, its fans say. It is not yet cluttered with celebrities, nosy mothers-in-law or annoying co-workers.”
Founder Dennis Crowley (who started a similar service called Dodgeball back in 2004) launched Foursquare back in March at South by Southwest. The tool is available in 31 cities, including Boston, New York and London to name a few. This service has also caught the eye of some notable investors, such as Union Square Ventures (prior investor to Twitter), Kevin Rose (founder of Digg) and Ron Conway (angel investor).
“Being the hot new thing is a factor, but that’s not totally the driving force behind Foursquare,” said Fred Wilson, general partner at Union Square Ventures. “There’s a part of it that’s just fun, and you can’t ignore how important that is in terms of usage.”
Going to check out Foursquare this week, see if it holds up to Facebook and Twitter. Stay tuned for updates on the best pumpkin martinis at local bars, deals on winter coats and much more!
